KUCHING: Key aspects of Malaysia’s history that need more emphasis in the school curriculum will be addressed during the Malaysian History Convention, set to take place on Sept 19 in Kuala Lumpur.
National Unity Minister Datuk Seri Aaron Ago Dagang said the large-scale convention, which will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, aims to provide a comprehensive exploration of Malaysia’s history.
“We see that the historical content in education may not be very thorough, with some aspects being left out,” Aaron said.
“From this convention, we hope to reach a level that aligns with what is preserved in the National Archives of Malaysia.”
He shared these remarks with reporters after attending the ‘Mengenang Negarawan Tun Datuk Patinggi Temenggung Jugah Barieng Negarawan Terbilang’ programme held at the Dayak Cultural Foundation (DCF) here on today (Sept 9).
The event is a signature programme of the National Archives aimed at honouring the nation’s statesmen in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day.
Reflecting on Tun Jugah’s legacy, Aaron noted that the latter’s contributions and sacrifices should inspire all Malaysians, particularly the people of Sarawak, and serve as a model for community and political leaders to follow for the nation’s prosperity.
“Tun Jugah was the first leader from Sarawak to be appointed as a Federal Minister when Malaysia was formed and served as Minister of Sarawak Affairs from 1963 to 1974,” Aaron said.
To honour Tun Jugah’s contributions, the government has decided to establish a memorial featuring national figures, including Tun Jugah, located on Jalan Dato Onn, Kuala Lumpur.
Aaron encouraged all Malaysians to visit the National Heroes Memorial to learn more about Tun Jugah’s sacrifices, contributions, and services to the country.
“This aligns with the goals outlined in the National Unity Policy to build a national identity with a sense of self and patriotism,” he added.
Also present at the event were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Tun Jugah’s son Tan Sri Leonard Linggi Jugah, and Tun Jugah’s grandson Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who is also the Works Minister.
