Mambong rep: Siburan has potential to become food basket for Kuching, Serian and Kota Samarahan

KUCHING, Sept 20: Siburan has the potential to become a major food-producing hub supplying Kuching, Serian and Kota Samarahan, supported by its agricultural land and established production of vegetables, poultry and other food products.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister of Transport (Air and Road) and Mambong assemblyman Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said the potential should be harnessed through structured development planning that takes into account the strengths and needs of the local community.

He said Siburan had suitable land for agricultural activities, while its residents already had experience in producing vegetables, poultry and various food products.

“This makes Siburan potentially able to continue playing a role as a ‘food basket’ for Kuching, Serian and Kota Samarahan,” he said at the 2026 Lantern Festival celebration organised by the Sarawak Chung Clan Association and the presentation of academic excellence incentives to members’ children here on Saturday (Sept 19).

Dr Jerip said infrastructure development, stronger community involvement, as well as investment in education and human capital should remain priorities to ensure Siburan developed into a progressive and competitive area.

“Siburan has undergone significant changes over the past several decades, particularly in terms of infrastructure, public amenities and economic opportunities for the local community.

“Now that Siburan is a new district, we can strengthen our administration and lay down clearer plans for future development,” he said. — DayakDaily
