SIBU: A private sector worker found himself RM202,000 poorer after falling victim to a stock investment scam.

The incident happened on Aug 9 when the man, in his 50s, received a WhatsApp message from an individual claiming to represent an investment company, offering a lucrative investment opportunity

Intrigued by promises of huge profits by Boci International Investment Club, the victim agreed to join the investment scheme and he was added into a WhatsApp group.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said that the man was also instructed to download an application used for investment purposes.

“Between Sept 26 to Oct 11 this year, the victim transferred RM202,000 via 13 transactions into three bank accounts, to commence his investment.

“When the victim attempted to contact the suspect regarding profit withdrawal on Oct 21, he received a series of excuses from the suspect.

“Feel suspicious and cheated, the man went to report the incident to the police for further investigation.”

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property.

In light of this, ACP Zulkipli cautioned the public against blindly trusting investment opportunities offered through social media.
