MIRI, May 31: A local man in his early 50s has fallen victim to a non-existent online investment scam, resulting in losses amounting to RM511,406 after being lured into 25 transactions over a two-month period.

“Preliminary investigations found that the victim first received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number on March 18, 2026.

“The suspect later engaged the victim in conversation before introducing an investment scheme that promised high and fast returns,” he said in a statement.

Tempted by the offer, the victim agreed to participate and was directed to a website — purportedly for investment purposes.

The victim was also instructed to make multiple payments to several bank accounts provided by the suspect.

Between April 1 and May 24, 2026, the victim carried out 25 transactions totalling RM511,406.

However, after the payments were made, the suspect continued demanding additional funds, claiming it was necessary for the victim to receive the promised investment returns.

The victim never received any profits or returns as promised and eventually realised he had been deceived.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Investigating officer for the case is Insp Sisim Abd Samad. — DayakDaily
