Man sentenced to 10 months in prison for assaulting foster sister

KUCHING, May 15: Awang Saufie Jasni, 37, was sentenced to eight months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today for injuring his foster sister during an incident at their residence in Matang last April.

He pleaded guilty to two charges read before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.

Awang was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code for issuing death threats against his 21-year-old foster sister.

His second charge was made under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A, for intentionally punching the victim’s face and kicking her in the stomach, causing bruises.

The offenses took place at a house on Jalan Matang around 3.51pm on April 25.

Magistrate Mason Jaro sentenced Awang to two months in prison for the first charge and eight months for the second charge. The court ruled that the sentences would run concurrently, effective immediately.

According to the case facts, during the incident, the complainant was helping her father hold a ladder to fix their house’s roof when the accused suddenly called their father in a harsh tone. Their mother reprimanded the accused to speak gently, but Awang became more furious, throwing plates and chairs towards the complainant.

Additionally, Awang kicked the complainant in the stomach and punched her face, causing her pain. Their father tried to prevent Awang from escalating the situation, but Awang issued death threats against his sister.

Fearing for her safety, the complainant filed a police report, leading to Awang’s arrest at their home on May 10.

The prosecution was conducted by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer. — DayakDaily
