Man who robbed three women in three days in Sibu gets 11 years, six strokes

SIBU (Aug 23): A man was sentenced by the Sessions Court here today to a total of 11 years in prison and six strokes of the cane for robbing three women in a span of three days.

Shahriz Abd Rahman, 28, pleaded guilty before Judge Musyiri Peet after the three charges under Section 392 of the Penal Code were read to him.

The Section provides for up to 14 years’ jail and a fine or whipping, upon conviction.

On the first charge, the accused was charged with robbing a 71-year-old woman of her handbag at the roadside of Jalan Empalam at about 9am on Aug 12, 2024.

The handbag contained a mobile phone, RM600 in cash, and personal documents.

On the second charge, Shahriz was charged with robbing a 37-year-old woman of her mobile phone, RM120 in cash and personal documents at Tong Sang Lane 4 at 8.26am on Aug 12, 2024.

On the third charge, he was accused of robbing a 35-year-old woman of RM130 in cash and personal documents at Jalan Tuanku Osman at 7.56am on Aug 10, 2024.

Judge Musyiri sentenced the accused to four years’ jail and two strokes of the cane for the first and second charges each, and three years’ jail and two strokes of the cane for the third charge.

The jail sentences for the first two charges are to run concurrently, while the sentence for the third charge is to run consecutively, meaning Shahriz will serve seven years in prison.

The accused was arrested on Aug 17 following police reports filed by the three victims, who were all able to pick him out from an identification parade.

Prosecuting was deputy public prosecutor David Bakit Nuing, while Shahriz was unrepresented.
