BAU (March 3): The Chap Goh Mei celebration in Bau drew massive crowds today, making it one of the largest processions ever held in the district.
State Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said this year’s festivities are especially significant as they coincide with Bau district’s 206th anniversary.
“This is one of the biggest events we have annually, also in conjunction with Bau’s 206th district existence.
“We have been doing this over the years, but this year is one of the biggest because of the large crowd.
“It is also supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) led by Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing,” he said to the reporters after making his way along the procession route.
A total of 106 lion dance groups from Bau and Kuching joined the procession, bringing vibrancy and festive cheer to the streets.
“The procession covered a distance of about three kilometres, beginning from Bong Loh Sian Temple and proceeding to Dewan Suarah Bau and Jalan Temenggong Salau before returning to the temple,” said Henry.

When asked about comparisons with the famed Singkawang procession, the Tasik Biru assemblyman stressed there was no rivalry.
“We’re not competing. We are like friends because some people living in Bau have family ties with Singkawang and Sambas.
“If you remember the history of the Chinese, they came all the way from Sambas and Singkawang during the gold mining era. So, we do it in a moderate way,” he said.
Henry added that Chap Goh Mei continues to bring the community together.
“When it comes to Chap Goh Mei like this, the community will all come regardless of background and they are all enjoying this,” he said.
