KUCHING (Oct 25): The renovation and upgrading works on the Matang Scout Training Camp is expected to complete in 18 months, said Sarawak Scouts Council deputy president Dato Mohamad Safri Abdillah.

The member of the National Scout Council said the project is to enhance facilities and resources for future training sessions.

He added that the tender of the project has been awarded to a local contractor.

“The current tender was awarded by the state Public Works Department (JKR) for the second time since the cost for the first one was too high,” Safri said.

He said this when officiating the opening of the ‘Assistant Leader Trainers Course for Scouters’ at the Youth and Sports Complex here on Wednesday, which gathered 72 participants.

The seven-day course was aimed at enhancing the management and executive skills and knowledge of scouters across the region, marking a significant step forward in leadership development within the scouting community.

Throughout the course, participants were able to learn key traits for effective leadership including patience, communication skills, empathy and problem-solving.

“These qualities are essential for fostering a supportive environment where young scouts can thrive,” Safri pointed out.

He also called upon all attendees to embrace their roles as trainers and mentors to inspire the next generation of scouts with their passion and dedication.

“The commitment to nurturing leadership within the scouting community was palpable, setting a hopeful tone for the future of scouting in Malaysia, as well as the Asia Pacific region, particularly in Indonesia, India, Brunei, the Philippines, and Nepal, where some of the participants came from,” he said.

Also present were National Scout Leaders Training commissioner Dr Ekbert Yong Yen Loong, Sarawak Chief Scout commissioner Capt Zainuddin Hamdan, National Scout Programme commissioner Major Khir Muda, and course director Dr Lim Yiet Im.
