KUCHING, June 24: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) staff have been encouraged not to be disheartened by public criticism, but instead to remain committed to serving the community with integrity, dedication and professionalism.

Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said public service is never without challenges and it is impossible to satisfy everyone at all times.

However, he stressed that what matters most is the continued effort to do what is right for the benefit of the people.

Speaking at the MBKS Gawai Dayak Open House and ‘Ngiling Tikai’ 2026 celebration at the council’s headquarters today, Wee acknowledged the sacrifices made by council personnel, many of whom work long hours, including weekends and public holidays, to keep Kuching South clean, safe and liveable.

“The public may not always see these sacrifices, but they are real. Behind every clean market, well-maintained park, upgraded drainage system and successful community programme are committed individuals giving their best for the community,” he said.

Wee said MBKS had continued to record steady progress over the past year, driven by infrastructure upgrades, improved recreational facilities, environmental sustainability initiatives, public health programmes and smart city development efforts.

He emphasised that these achievements were made possible through the collective commitment of councillors, officers and staff across all departments.

At the same time, he highlighted that MBKS’s strength lies in its diversity, with personnel from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds working together towards a shared goal of serving residents.

Wee also expressed appreciation for Dayak councillors and staff, recognising their contributions in strengthening the multicultural identity of Sarawak.

The event was officiated by Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, along with his deputy Datuk Pengguang Manggil.

Also present were political secretary to the Premier Kho Teck Wan, MBKS Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, MBKS acting city secretary Wong Ming Kong, as well as councillors and staff. — DayakDaily
