KUCHING, April 9: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has deployed its teams to carry out urgent clearing works on scupper drains at 3rd Mile and Stutong, aiming to prevent flash floods and maintain smooth water flow during heavy rains.
Mayor of Kuching South Dato Wee Hong Seng said the operation is part of MBKS’ proactive measures to ensure that drainage systems remain clear and fully functional.
“Scupper drains play a critical role in channeling excess rainwater efficiently. Any blockage caused by rubbish, fallen leaves or silt can disrupt water flow and increase the risk of flooding,” he explained in a statement today.
MBKS personnel were on site removing accumulated debris and ensuring that water can flow freely through the drainage system.
These efforts form part of the council’s ongoing maintenance programme to safeguard public safety and minimise flood risks in areas prone to heavy rainfall.
Wee emphasised that while the council continues to strengthen its maintenance efforts, public cooperation remains essential.
“We urge the community to play their part by not disposing of waste into drains. Keeping our environment clean is a shared responsibility and is key to preventing avoidable flooding,” he added.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to immediate action and continuous improvement of drainage conditions across Kuching South, striving to ensure a safe and resilient city for all residents. — DayakDaily
