KUCHING, March 27: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has dismissed speculation linking him to the expulsion of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kuching branch chairwoman Datuk Lily Yong from the party.

He stressed that he is not involved in the party’s disciplinary process and is unaware of the reasons behind the decision.

“I don’t know because I’m not in the party’s Central Working Committee (CWC).

“I don’t know what is the reason and whatever it is,” he told reporters when met at MBKS building here today.

His remarks come following reports that Yong had been expelled from SUPP in connection with a disciplinary action allegedly linked to the Kenyalang Gold Card issue.

Addressing suggestions that the expulsion could be tied to past tensions during the 2021 Sarawak Election, when Yong had openly criticised his candidacy, Wee played down the relevance of such claims.

“That was so many years ago. For me, I have already forgotten what actually happened. Why should we remember all the past? We move on,” he said.

Wee, who is also the SUPP Pending deputy chairman, said past issues should not be revisited, urging all parties to move forward and focus on serving the people.

Yong, a former SUPP vice-president who led the Kuching branch for more than 20 years, drew controversy during the 2021 Sarawak State election when she dissolved the party’s election machinery for the Padungan seat in protest after Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) named Wee as its candidate; the seat was ultimately retained by Chong Chieng Jen of Democratic Action Party (DAP), who won with a 1,198-vote majority.

On whether Yong could appeal the party’s decision, Wee said it would be up to the party leadership and processes in place.

“If you think you want to appeal, you appeal. That’s the procedure. Just follow the procedures and leave it to the leaders to decide,” he said.

Wee added that his priority remains his role as mayor, focusing on delivering services to the public.

“I want to concentrate on my work so that I have more time serving the rakyat rather than being busy with party matters,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
