KUCHING, Dec 24: The public and business operators at Hui Sing Commercial Centre have been urged to refrain from throwing rubbish into drains and to avoid placing structures that obstruct drainage access, as such actions can cause blockages and hinder maintenance efforts.

Making this appeal, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng stressed the importance of community cooperation as he urged residents and businesses to play their part in keeping drains unobstructed.

“Community collaboration is essential to support MBKS’ efforts in safeguarding public health and improving urban living conditions,” he said following a site revisit today.

Wee, accompanied by Pemanca Tan Kun Gee, councillor Eric Tay, and several officers, inspected the drainage conditions at the commercial centre.

The revisit followed an earlier site visit last month and was carried out at the request of Pemanca Tan.

During the inspection, the team noted that the ageing drainage system is prone to clogging, especially when rubbish accumulates.

“Some illegal structures in the vicinity have also covered parts of the drains, complicating clearing and maintenance works. Such conditions can lead to water stagnation, which increases the risk of mosquito breeding and poses a threat to public health,” Wee warned.

MBKS has carried out clearing works in accessible areas and will continue monitoring the drains to ensure smoother water flow and reduce stagnant water risks.

“The council remains committed to proactive inspections and maintenance, working closely with community leaders to ensure a cleaner, safer, and healthier city for all,” he affirmed. — DayakDaily
