KUCHING, June 24: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has called on officers and staff of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to consistently uphold professionalism, integrity and accountability in delivering public services, stressing that local authorities represent the level of government closest to the people.
Dr Sim said public perception of government is largely shaped by everyday interactions with local councils, particularly through services such as licensing, public health, enforcement, infrastructure maintenance and community programmes.
“In this era of digital technology, citizens expect greater efficiency, transparency and responsiveness. Public interest must guide every decision and action taken by public servants,” he said when officiating the MBKS Gawai Dayak Open House and ‘Ngiling Tikai’ 2026 celebration at the council’s headquarters today.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, stressed that professionalism extends beyond knowledge and technical skills, encompassing discipline, responsibility, respect and a commitment to excellence, while integrity must remain the cornerstone of public service.
He further urged MBKS personnel to cultivate a work culture grounded in accountability, transparency and ethical conduct, noting that public trust is difficult to rebuild once lost.
At the same time, he commended MBKS for its achievements in innovation, sustainability, community engagement and smart city initiatives, as well as its efforts in positioning Kuching as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
He attributed the council’s progress to strong leadership, teamwork and the dedication of its workforce, and congratulated MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, councillors and staff for their accomplishments.
Dr Sim also extended Gawai Dayak greetings to all celebrating, noting that the festival reflects values of gratitude, fellowship, unity and mutual respect that have long contributed to Sarawak’s peace, harmony and prosperity.
“Through the greeting ‘Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai’, we have helped shape Sarawak into a prosperous and stable State admired by many,” he said.
Also present were Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Penguang Manggil, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, political secretary to the Premier Kho Teck Wan, acting MBKS city secretary Wong Ming Kong, councillors and staff. — DayakDaily
