KUCHING, April 30: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) today planted 68 “Happiness Trees” along Jalan Sherip Masahor in conjunction with World Earth Day, reinforcing its commitment to building a greener, low-carbon city.

Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the initiative, though simple, carries significant long-term impact as the trees, scientifically known as Garcinia subelliptica, are well-suited to the local climate and will benefit the community for years to come.

“Today is not just about planting trees. Every tree we plant helps to absorb carbon dioxide from the air. Too much CO2 contributes to global warming, so by planting trees, we are helping to reduce carbon and move towards a low-carbon city,” he said during the Tree Planting Programme held along the stretch.

Wee added that the council had already planted 93 trees along the same road in 2024, covering the area from 3rd Mile Roundabout to Hui Sing roundabout, and today’s effort continues the vision of transforming the entire stretch into a greener, more comfortable environment for the public.

He stressed that increasing tree cover would lead to cleaner air, cooler surroundings, and improved overall liveability, aligning Kuching’s development with global sustainability targets.

The initiative also supports key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Sustainable Cities and Communities, Climate Action, and Life on Land, by enhancing urban greenery, mitigating climate change, and promoting biodiversity.

Wee emphasised that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility, urging the public to play their part through simple actions such as planting trees, reducing waste, and maintaining cleanliness.

“The trees we plant today are an investment for the future. One day, they will provide shade, reduce heat, improve air quality, and make this area more beautiful,” he said.

He also expressed appreciation to all participants, noting that their involvement reflects a growing awareness and collective commitment towards protecting the environment and shaping a sustainable future for Kuching. — DayakDaily
