KUCHING (Dec 30): Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is intensifying long-term planning to ensure the city remains liveable and inclusive for residents of all ages, said mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

In his New Year message, Wee said MBKS is taking a deliberate, life-cycle approach to urban development in response to an ageing population and the evolving needs of younger generations.

“Our policies recognise that a city must serve every stage of life — from child-friendly initiatives and safe streets to senior wellness programmes and inclusive public spaces.

“No group should be marginalised in urban planning,” he told The Borneo Post.

Wee added that MBKS’ focus goes beyond physical infrastructure to include public health, accessibility, and the daily usability of public spaces.

Parks, neighbourhood facilities, and community spaces are being designed to be functional and accessible rather than purely ornamental.

As part of its forward-looking approach, the council is also maintaining consistent attention to cleanliness, infrastructure maintenance, and public health initiatives, which are essential foundations for sustainable urban growth.

“These may not be glamorous achievements, but they are dependable. Dependable governance allows a city to grow without losing its soul,” he said.

On sustainability, Wee emphasised that environmental responsibility requires ongoing commitment rather than political rhetoric, citing waste management, urban greenery, recycling programmes, and responsible planning as areas that need continuous attention.

He also highlighted the role of local government in Sarawak’s broader nation-building agenda, noting that strong municipal governance and improved community liveability contribute to a confident, self-sustaining, and forward-looking state.

Touching on leadership and governance values, Wee said Sarawak’s stability has been built on practical governance, moderation, and social cohesion rather than divisive politics.

“Kuching has never been defined by one race, one faith, or one political slogan. We are defined by our ability to live together with respect, restraint, and shared purpose.

“In a world that often rewards noise and division, Sarawak has always chosen a different path — a quieter path, a steadier one. A path that puts harmony before headlines, and results before rhetoric,” he said.

Wee stressed that the future of Sarawak will be shaped by those who govern effectively, prioritising unity, moderation, and holistic welfare—balancing economic strength, social harmony, environmental care, and cultural respect.

Concluding his message, he said MBKS will continue improving what can be better while preserving what makes Kuching South unique, calling on residents to embrace 2026 with unity and confidence.

“I wish all residents of Kuching South and fellow Sarawakians a New Year filled with health, purpose, and confidence in the future we are building together,” he said.
