KUCHING (Feb 18): Barely days after the Chinese New Year festivities wrapped up, the Stutong Community Market is set to be transformed into a vibrant Ramadan Bazaar featuring 160 stalls when it opens tomorrow.

Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is carrying out preparations to ensure a seamless transition between the two major festive seasons, reflecting the city’s dynamic and multicultural spirit.

“Puasa (fasting) will start tomorrow so MBKS will be putting up the Ramadan Bazaar at the Stutong Community Market — 160 stalls,” he told reporters when met during his Chinese New Year open house visit by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi here.

Wee noted that MBKS had organised three Chinese New Year bazaars this year, and would continue to maintain one at the Stutong Community Market, which can accommodate up to 160 traders.

He added that festive bazaars in Sarawak typically draw crowds from all communities, reflecting the state’s culture of mutual respect and shared celebrations, regardless of whether it is Ramadan, Chinese New Year or other festivities.

Welcoming the Governor’s visit, Wee said he was pleased that Wan Junaidi made time to meet members of the public and share in the festive cheer.

Looking ahead, he expressed hope that the new year would bring good health and happiness to all.

“Most important, good health, happiness all the time. Prosperity can come later. Because when you have good health, when you are happy, then you can make more money,” he said.

He also highlighted the role of government-organised open houses throughout the year — including Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Gawai — as important platforms for strengthening unity and fostering closer ties among Sarawakians.
