KUCHING, April 16: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will continue to serve the people under its jurisdiction with integrity and dedication, despite ongoing challenges, says Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.

He said trust from the public is key to enabling the council to carry out its responsibilities effectively while maintaining harmony in Kuching and Sarawak as a whole.

“It’s not just about being a council with authority, but about winning hearts and doing our work with integrity,” he said.

“We want to ensure every ringgit and public resource is spent wisely because it belongs to the people, so that together we can achieve a better quality of life.

“All this must be practised and defended as we serve,” he said during his speech at the MBKS Gong Xi Raya 2026 celebration with staff at the council lobby today.

Wee also urged council staff to remain prepared, noting that global economic instability and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East could have significant impacts on people’s lives.

He said that while challenges persist, the real “battle,” as he described it, lies in winning and maintaining the trust of the people.

“Always uphold order and fairness, safeguard the well-being of the people, and ensure that our systems and infrastructure run with precision and care,” he said.

Wee added that Malaysia had at times faced challenges to unity, where misunderstandings threatened social cohesion, but said Sarawak continues to stand apart by maintaining harmony.

He said the Gong Xi Raya celebration reflects Sarawak’s unique unity, bringing people together not only in good times but also during periods of difficulty.

“For the council, it’s not just about saving costs by combining celebrations, although it also reflects our responsibility in uncertain times. It is about sending a message to ourselves and the people we serve that unity is not negotiable,” he said.
