KUCHING (Feb 7): Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has reaffirmed Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) commitment to supporting hawkers at Bintawa Market, ensuring their concerns are heard and improvements are made to the market environment.

Speaking to reporters during a Chinese New Year (CNY) gathering with hawkers at Bintawa Market here, Wee said the initiative is part of a series of market visits, following Sungai Apong Market last week, with future visits planned for Kenyalang and Stutong markets.

“This is to show our appreciation to all the hawkers who have been operating here for many years, providing affordable and quality food for residents and workers in the area,” he said.

The gathering also served as a reunion lunch, allowing hawkers to meet fellow operators, city councillors, and council officers, and to discuss issues or improvements needed in the market.

Wee highlighted that the council has never increased market rental rates and frequently uses grants to enhance facilities.

“We are always here for the hawkers. They don’t have to look far or wait to communicate with us.

“Our mobile service ensures we are present across the markets,” he said.

Adding a festive touch, all the food at the gathering was prepared by the hawkers themselves, showcasing local favourites such as cakes and satay.

“This is about building connections, strengthening community, and letting everyone feel that this market is theirs, and we, as the city council, are part of the family too,” he added.
