KUCHING (Feb 7): Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will establish the Padungan Heritage Conservation Task Force to strengthen coordination and advance efforts in preserving Padungan’s heritage — one of Kuching’s oldest and most historically significant areas, said Dato Wee Hong Seng.

Announcing the initiative while officiating the Padungan Chinese New Year Street Festival 2026 here tonight, the Kuching South Mayor emphasised that Padungan is more than just a commercial stretch — it is a community with over 100 years of living history.

“The task force will focus on technical and structural assessments, conservation requirements and improvement measures to ensure the safety, sustainability and long-term preservation of heritage buildings in Padungan, while respecting the needs of the community and ongoing economic activities.

“Many families have built their livelihoods here, generation after generation. Shops have been passed down, friendships have grown, and countless memories have been created along these streets.

“This strong sense of community is what gives Padungan its unique character,” he said.

In conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year, Wee highlighted seven newly installed murals along Padungan Street, bringing its rich heritage to life for both residents and visitors — providing a fitting backdrop to the festival’s opening.

“These murals are a visual tribute to the merchants, craftsmen and families who built this area and kept it thriving for more than 100 years,” he said.

On the festival itself, Wee said the Padungan Chinese New Year Street Festival 2026 transforms the historic street into a shared community space, continuing a tradition that began with local merchants who simply wanted to celebrate Chinese New Year together while bringing joy, life and positive energy back to Padungan.

“This festival is about togetherness. It is about celebrating our traditions while strengthening bonds between residents, traders and visitors,” he said, adding that it also provides an opportunity for local businesses to thrive during the festive season.

Running from Feb 6-15, visitors can look forward to a vibrant line-up of programmes, including 24 Festive Drums performances, lion and dragon dances, Chinese orchestra performances, cultural dances, live band shows and singing competitions, among other activities.

Wee also expressed appreciation to the Padungan Merchant Association, MBKS and supporting agencies for their dedication and collaboration in making the festival possible.

“To the people of Kuching and our visitors, l invite you to come, walk the streets of Padungan, enjoy the murals that tell Padungan’s story, support our local traders, and share in the joy and festive spirit of Chinese New Year,” he said.
