KUCHING, Dec 23: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has completed upgrades to two public toilets at Petanak Market and Padungan Garden to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities (OKU), senior citizens and the public.

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the Petanak Market upgrade involved converting a former storage room into a ground-level, OKU-friendly toilet to address long-standing complaints from elderly market-goers.

“The former storage room has been converted into an OKU-friendly toilet to provide easier access, especially for elderly market-goers,” he said when speaking to reporters at the handover ceremony at Petanak Market today.

The RM80,880 project followed requests raised by elderly users through the market chairlady and later highlighted by hawkers during a visit by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian earlier this year.

Wee said the facility, while designed for OKU users, is also open to seniors and others who require easier access.

The upgrade is part of MBKS’s broader revitalisation efforts at Pasar Petanak, built in 1988, which has seen improvements including repainting, upgraded lighting and better ventilation.

Earlier the same day, Wee attended the handover of the upgraded public toilet at Padungan Garden, a heritage and tourism area. The facility, last upgraded in 1993, underwent refurbishment to meet current standards.

“The toilet required refurbishment to meet current standards of cleanliness, safety and accessibility,” he added.

He said the RM174,250 project included an OKU-friendly toilet, a baby diaper changing room, improved lighting along footpaths, a pavilion and related enhancements, and was funded under the Building Plan (BP) Type 1 allocation from the Ministry for Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG).
