KUCHING, May 19: The redevelopment of the MBKS Swimming Pool into a water fun park and UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy centre has reached 78.87 per cent completion and is expected to open in the third quarter of 2026.

According to Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the project would serve as a dual-purpose landmark combining recreational attractions with a culinary hub aimed at preserving Sarawak’s food heritage.

“The gastronomy centre would also provide local chefs with an international-standard platform to showcase their culinary talent,” he said.

He said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

Meanwhile, he said the Sarawak Performing Arts Centre was also progressing according to schedule with physical works reaching 34.13 per cent as of April this year and completion targeted for the second quarter of 2027.

According to him, the performing arts centre is envisioned as a world-class venue capable of attracting major international productions and visitors while creating opportunities for local performers and creative talents.

On heritage preservation efforts, Abdul Karim said the Sarawak Museum Department had completed the design works for the restoration and upgrading of several gazetted historical forts across the State. The projects involve Fort Hose, Fort Lily, Fort Emma and Fort Brooke. — DayakDaily
