KUCHING (Dec 11): The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has been honoured with the prestigious Local Authorities Inclusive Award for Persons with Disabilities for its innovative Ausome Park.

The award was presented to Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng by Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Development II (Community Wellbeing Development) Datuk Mohammad Razi Sitam during the Sarawak Persons with Disabilities (PwD) Day 2025 celebration at Imperial Hotel here yesterday.

“Ausome Park represents our belief that inclusivity must be at the heart of city planning,” said Wee upon receiving the award.

He emphasised that the recognition reinforces the council’s commitment to ensuring no one is left behind in Kuching’s development.

“Every individual deserves access to safe, welcoming, and supportive public spaces.”

Situated within MBKS jurisdiction, Ausome Park is a landmark facility specifically designed to cater to the needs of children on the autism spectrum and persons with disabilities.

It features sensory play zones, barrier-free access, wheelchair-friendly pathways, quiet areas for emotional regulation, and safety-enhanced play structures.

Since its opening, the park has received widespread praise from parents, caregivers, and community organisations, serving as a model for future autism-friendly public spaces in the city.

Wee reiterated the council’s dedication to expanding such accessibility initiatives, stating: “This award encourages us to continue improving facilities to ensure all residents, regardless of ability, can enjoy equal opportunity, and an improved quality of life.”

The accolade solidifies Kuching South’s leadership in fostering inclusive and compassionate urban development.
