KUCHING, Oct 15: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is monitoring online discussions amid growing friction between Malaysians and Indonesians over the haze crisis, as anger mounts over the persistent air pollution affecting the country.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said MCMC had yet to receive any public complaints regarding content deemed extremely offensive in connection with the issue.

“MCMC is monitoring the situation. So far, MCMC has not received any complaints from the public regarding any content deemed extremely offensive in connection with this issue,” he told reporters after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the Kuching Smart City and Digital Connectivity project at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) today.

Fahmi acknowledged public anger over the recurring haze, which has affected Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, with pollution originating from Kalimantan.

The growing tension has spilled onto social media, where Malaysians and Indonesians have engaged in online disputes over the haze, raising concerns that unchecked hostility could escalate tensions between the people of both countries.

He said the federal government had sent a letter requesting permission to deploy its assets to help extinguish the fires but had yet to receive a reply as of today.

Fahmi said further updates might be provided by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi or Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup following Friday’s (Oct 16) federal Cabinet meeting. — DayakDaily
