MIRI (Nov 2): A team of media divers and volunteers embarked on an ambitious ghost net clean-up operation at Batu Belais diving site yesterday, in an effort to restore natural habitats and improve the safety and aesthetics of the site.
Spearheaded by Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) and supported by local divers, the initiative aimed to remove about 100kg to 200kg of ghost nets from the diving site.
The flag-off was performed by Miri MP Chiew Choon Man, representing Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Sustainability Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, at the Pulau Melayu jetty.
“The media divers played a dual role: to remove the ghost nets, and to engage with the community and diving enthusiasts in marine conservation.
“This initiative promotes sustainable diving practices and highlights the divers’ responsibility in protecting underwater environments.
“As media divers document and publicise the clean-up, they amplify awareness about the dangers of ghost nets and promote responsible behaviours among divers and the public,” said Huang in his speech, whose text speech was read by Chiew.
“Documenting the clean-up is crucial as it serves multiple purposes. Educational materials drawn from this operation will inform and inspire others on the importance of marine conservation, while also encouraging similar initiatives in regions facing comparable environmental challenges.
“By showcasing our success here at Batu Belais, I hope it inspires similar actions in other affected areas,” he added.
He further emphasised that the reports will reach beyond the diving community, spreading awareness of marine conservation and inspiring more people to join in the fight to protect the oceans.
“This operation is more than just an event; it is a call for action and a reminder that we all have a role to play in protecting our oceans. Whether through direct action, raising awareness or supporting conservation efforts, each of us can contribute to the preservation of our marine environments,” he added.
Also present were NSJA president Chai Chon Chin and secretary Clare Cinderella, as well as the event’s organising chairperson Noriza Jau.
