THE proposed definition of Memorial Archive presents an opportunity to preserve not only the history of individuals and events, but also the historical foundations of Sarawak’s participation in Malaysia.
Kota Sentosa assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Sau Sin said that as Sarawak continued to pursue development and address matters relating to its rights under Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), it was important to ensure that future generations inherited more than just aspirations.
He said that a memorial archive should not merely be a place where old documents and objects are stored away.
“It should be a living space where history can be discovered, experienced and understood. That is why this amendment (Sarawak State Library (Amendment) Bill) matters.

“It is not simply about preserving the past. It is about equipping Sarawakians with the knowledge to understand the present and shape our future with confidence,” he said.
He said this when debating in support of the Sarawak State Library (Amendment) Bill, 2026 at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today.
He said the formation of Malaysia, which came into being on September 16, 1963, was a defining chapter in Sarawak’s history, with the arrangements made at the time continuing to inform discussions on the State’s rights, autonomy and development.
“A well-established memorial archive could provide an appropriate platform to preserve and exhibit materials relating to the formation of Malaysia, including historical documents, photographs, correspondence, official publications and the contributions of Sarawak’s founding leaders.
“Such a collection would help students, researchers and members of the public better understand the historical foundations of our Federation,” he said.
However, he said the challenge is to ensure that these stories are not lost simply because we failed to recognise their value in time.
“The Sarawak State Library, through the strengthened framework provided by this amendment, can play an important role in ensuring that our historical heritage is protected, accessible and appreciated,” he added.
Yap also stressed Sarawak must continue to modernise, innovate and progress, while remaining firmly connected to the roots that make us who we are.
