KUCHING, Apr 21: A tea made from the vegetable midin is among the locally developed products drawing interest at the Sarawak Pavilion during the Food & Hospitality Asia (FHA) 2026, highlighting how Sarawak businesses are turning traditional ingredients into marketable products.

According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the midin-based tea reflects the ability of local entrepreneurs to add value to existing resources and develop unique products for international markets.

“Midin, which we normally recognise as a vegetable, has now been commercialised as a beverage and is gaining a positive response in the Singapore market,” he said after officiating the Sarawak Pavilion at the event today.

The pavilion, organised by the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore (STATOS), features 19 exhibitors occupying a 126-square-metre space at the exhibition held at Singapore Expo.

He said platforms such as FHA provide opportunities for Sarawak’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to expand market reach and strengthen their branding at the international level.

The pavilion showcases a range of Sarawak products including Sarawak pepper, bird’s nest, Empurau and Sarawak Gold 1 pineapple (SG1), alongside tasting sessions that allow visitors to experience the distinctive qualities of the State’s produce.

Awang Tengah, who is also Sarawak Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, said the State’s strengths in agriculture and fisheries provide a strong foundation for local producers to compete globally.

He noted that international consumers increasingly prioritise product quality and safety, requiring producers to adapt their processes and standards to meet market expectations.

Also present were Deputy Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment Malcom Mussen Lamoh, STATOS chairman Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani and other officials.

FHA 2026, held from April 21 to 24, is expected to attract more than 80,000 international visitors, offering expanded opportunities for business networking and investment. — DayakDaily
