Digital integration under the Old Kuching Smart Heritage (OKSHE) initiative aims to enhance conservation and tourism efforts following its transfer to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP).By Amanda L
KUCHING, May 6: The integration of digital elements into the Old Kuching Smart Heritage (OKSHE) initiative will complement rather than disrupt conservation and tourism efforts, following its transfer from Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) to improve coordination.
Its minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that DBKU’s continued involvement remains crucial, citing its experience and familiarity with the heritage trail and surrounding communities.
“The shift in oversight does not mean we are starting from scratch. DBKU has been closely involved from the beginning, and that collaboration will continue,” he said at a press conference after the handover ceremony at the Baitulmakmur II, today.
The ministry plans to expand OKSHE through digital applications and more immersive visitor experiences, including interactive content designed to enhance how visitors engage with Kuching’s historical sites.
At the same time, Abdul Karim said efforts will be guided by sustainability principles, with an emphasis on protecting heritage assets and involving local communities in programme development.
He added that MTCP is reviewing approaches adopted by other heritage cities to refine its strategy, particularly in balancing modern tourism tools with conservation needs.
Looking ahead, the State government is studying the possibility of designating specific heritage zones along the OKSHE route. The proposal is intended to improve maintenance planning and safeguard historical buildings.
Abdul Karim noted that implementing such zones would require new legislation to streamline coordination among agencies and provide a clear framework for conservation.
“With proper zoning, we can better identify areas that need restoration and ensure development is managed in an orderly manner,” he said, adding that discussions would involve the State Attorney-General’s Chambers and DBKU.
OKSHE was introduced under the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2018–2022 to use technology in preserving and promoting the cultural and historical identity of old Kuching. — DayakDaily
