KUCHING (March 10): Academic qualifications must be recognised and accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and the Public Service Commission (SPA), particularly for those intending to pursue careers in the civil service.

Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn noted that while qualifications may vary for careers outside the civil service, accreditation is especially critical for those aiming to join government service.

He also emphasised that education at all levels must be aligned with practical action and real-world needs.

“In our ministry, our policy on talent development has always been emphasised, and the government and industry must work hand in hand.

“The same goes for tertiary education or any form of education—it must be aligned to an action. Otherwise we are not doing justice to those that we are teaching.

“This is why collaboration across government, academia and industry is essential,” he said during the launch of the Centre for Pre-University and Continuing Education (CPUCE) and the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) at UCSI Hotel here on Tuesday.

He cautioned against the growing practice of obtaining qualifications without genuine learning.

“We are all aware that one could get any degree by simply subscribing to it, without actually learning, so we have to be careful,” he said.

Sagah added that Sarawak’s strength lies in its people.

“When we empower individuals to advance academically and professionally, we strengthen families, organisations and ultimately the state.

“The future of education must be flexible, inclusive and responsive. It must accommodate diverse learners, including young graduates, mid-career professionals, and those returning to education,” he said.
