KOTA SAMARAHAN, June 10: Sarawak’s push to elevate its higher education landscape is set to take a major step forward as the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) confirms it will approve the State government’s application to upgrade iCATS University College to full university status in the near future.

In a TVS news report, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir said MOHE fully supports Sarawak’s effort to expand access to higher education and strengthen its State-owned institutions.

“At the Ministry of Higher Education level, we will assist in approving the Sarawak government’s application for iCATS, which currently has university college status, to be upgraded,” he told reporters after launching the MySISWA@Job on Campus (MySISWA@JoC) Public Universities Programme at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) yesterday (June 9).

He added that the upgrade process is not a problem as the institution is already running and established.

“So, we have no problem with efforts to upgrade it into a full university, as iCATS is already running and already has its campus,” he said.

The announcement comes following Premier Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s earlier plan to upgrade iCATS as part of the State’s strategy to strengthen human capital development.

Zambry added that close cooperation between MOHE and the Sarawak government will continue to ensure all academic and governance requirements are met during the transition process. — DayakDaily
