MIRI (Dec 10): The Digital Ministry has intensified efforts to empower rural communities by introducing artificial intelligence (AI) training under the Kampung Angkat Madani (KAM) initiative in Kampung Piasau Utara, alongside a RM1 million package of community infrastructure upgrades.

Secretary-general Fabian Bigar said the ministry conducted an ‘AI for MyFuture’ course on Monday to expose villagers to basic AI concepts, safe usage practices and the technology’s practical applications in daily life.

“The programme was organised to give residents early exposure to AI and how it can be used safely, responsibly and effectively,” he said at the project handover ceremony on Tuesday.

“I hope the community here will truly benefit from the training provided.”

Fabian said integrating digital capacity-building into rural development marked a shift towards a more holistic and balanced approach for both rural and urban areas.

“The Digital Ministry is committed not only to technological progress, but also to enhancing basic infrastructure and the overall quality of life for rural communities,” he said.

The KAM project, completed this year, involved the refurbishment of Masjid Darul Hijrah, Holy Rosary Chapel and the Kampung Piasau Utara multipurpose hall — key venues for the village’s cultural and community activities.

Solar-powered LED street lights were installed along several main routes to enhance night-time safety, while a new funeral van was handed over to the community.

Administrative equipment was also provided to support the village development and security committee (JKKK).

Fabian said the upgraded facilities were designed to support long-term well-being and community resilience.

“I hope these new amenities will be well cared for and fully utilised. Use them as catalysts to improve quality of life and strengthen unity within the village,” he said.

He added that the KAM initiative aligned with the government’s aspiration for balanced urban-rural development and inclusive digital transformation.

“With the integration of digital learning and infrastructure development, we aim to foster a more dynamic and future-ready rural society.

“This programme can be a starting point for stronger socio-economic growth that progresses in tandem with digital advancement,” he said.

The completed project was handed over to village residents represented by deputy village chief Mohd Mansor Mohd Hatim.

Fabian expressed confidence that Kampung Piasau Utara would continue to thrive in line with the Madani vision for sustainable community development.

Also present were Sarawak Development Office director Dato Jasni Jubli and deputy Miri mayor Ariffin Mohamad.
