MIRI: In a significant move to strengthen bilateral ties, Miri City Council (MCC) and Guangning County, Zhaoqing City, signed a Friendship City agreement today, marking a pivotal step towards closer collaboration in various sectors.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian hailed the agreement as a momentous occasion, emphasising its profound significance in fostering cultural, educational, tourism, and trade exchanges between the two cities.

“This agreement will bring both sides closer. I hope that following this signing, our friendship and cultural exchanges will transcend mere symbolism, leading to tangible progress and implementation,” he said.

Dr Sim highlighted the potential benefits of the agreement, particularly in promoting collaboration among Chinese communities, entrepreneurs, and compatriots, which he described as a pathway to mutual development and shared success.

“This is indeed the highest and most virtuous path,” he added.

Miri, the second-largest city in Sarawak, is not just gaining national recognition but is also making headlines globally. Home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Gunung Mulu National Park and Niah Caves — Miri’s natural beauty and cultural heritage continue to be a source of pride for its residents.

Dr Sim’s remarks were delivered by Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang, during the ceremony.

He noted that today’s signing was the culmination of 12 years of efforts since the initial “Letter of Intent” and the “Cloud Signing” of the memorandum of understanding to foster friendly relations and cooperation between Miri and Guangning.

Dr Sim also praised the Miri Guangning Association and Gao Changcheng, chairman of the Guangdong Mingyang Education Group, for their pivotal roles in facilitating this partnership.

“You are the true matchmakers in this endeavour. Your spirit is truly commendable!” he said, expressing confidence that Miri’s cultural ties and friendships would continue to flourish through ongoing collaboration.

The signing of this Friendship City agreement is particularly timely, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China — a milestone Dr Sim likened to a “golden anniversary” of the two nations’ enduring relationship.

The event was attended by several notable figures, including Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching Xing Weiping, Guangning County secretary Chen Chaochang, and Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.
