KUCHING, Jan 20: Miri City Council (MCC) is taking action against unlicensed durian sales through a phased enforcement approach aimed at ensuring safety and fairness.

MCC mayor and Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang said enforcement activities during the durian season are carried out in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), beginning with reminders to traders.

“MCC issued official press statements on Aug 25, 2025, and Jan 9, 2026, to remind seasonal fruit traders to operate only at locations designated by the local authorities.

“This measure is not intended to cause inconvenience to anyone, but to ensure public safety, environmental cleanliness, and fairness to licensed traders who comply with the rules,” he said at a press conference at the Miri City Council Hall yesterday (Jan 19), as reported by TVS.

Yii said enforcement officers first conducted site visits, during which 28 warnings and five compounds were issued to traders found violating the regulations.

Despite the warnings, 13 traders continued operating without permission, prompting enforcement action from Jan 13 to 15.

“Any seized items may be reclaimed by the traders in accordance with SOPs, while unclaimed items will be properly disposed of at MCC’s disposal site in Kuala Baram, with the entire process recorded to ensure transparency.

“All disposal procedures are officially documented and can be shown to the public if necessary. MCC remains committed to carrying out its duties transparently and with integrity,” he added.

In addition, MCC has encouraged large-scale durian traders to operate at Pujut Corner (Old Bus Terminal) free of charge.

Yii also said MCC will continue working closely with traders and the community to create a cleaner, more organised, and inclusive Miri. — DayakDaily
