MIRI, Dec 1: Miri City Council (MCC) has seized 72 derelict vehicles which have been left abandoned within its jurisdiction.

According to MCC mayor Adam Yii, the MCC depot is now home to these derelict vehicles that were removed by the council from back lanes, residential areas or public car parks.

“Derelict vehicles continue to be an eyesore in neighbourhoods and now have become an environmental hazard as well.

“To top it off, the MCC is running out of space to store these derelict vehicles,” said Yii at the MCC Full Council Meeting today.

He said MCC is in the midst of going through court process of disposal applications and it would like to request vehicle owners to deal with the Road Transport Department themselves for smoother disposal.

“The onus is on vehicle owners to dispose of their assets voluntarily instead of abandoning them.

“If the owners can voluntarily de-register or remove their ownership from the vehicles, it will help shorten the disposal process and free up space at MCC depot. This can help resolve the cases fast.

“For the public information, MCC is empowered to remove abandoned cars under By-Laws 27 Cleanliness By Laws 1999. This provision allowed the MCC to remove derelict vehicles that caused obstruction in public places,” said Yii.— DayakDaily
