MIRI (Jan 16): The Miri Marathon 2026 is set to redefine the region’s sports tourism landscape with the introduction of cutting-edge technology, including the first-ever humanoid robot participation in a marathon in Southeast Asia, said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting.

At a press conference, Ting said the ninth edition of the marathon, scheduled for April 12, 2026, will be flagged off at 1am along Jalan Merpati in front of Permaisuri Imperial City Mall, and is expected to attract 10,000 runners from around the world.

“This year’s bold theme, ‘Tech x Sports x Tourism’, reflects Miri Marathon’s forward-looking vision in integrating innovation with sports and tourism. It is not just a race, but a platform that showcases how technology can enhance sporting experiences and elevate Miri’s global profile,” he said.

In a historic milestone for the region, Ting highlighted that Miri Marathon 2026 will feature a humanoid robot running alongside human participants, delivering technology-powered interactions and live performances throughout the event.

“This is a first for Southeast Asia. It positions Miri Marathon as a pioneer in blending innovation with sports tourism, and signals Miri’s readiness to host future-forward global events,” he added.

Organised by the Miri Marathon Association since 2017, the annual event has grown steadily to become one of Sarawak’s flagship running events.

According to Ting, Miri Marathon 2026 will feature four race categories — the 42.195km Full Marathon, 21km Half Marathon, 10km Speed Run and 5km Fun Run — with routes showcasing Miri’s landmarks, parks and beachfronts.

“As of now, 6,689 runners from 24 countries have already registered, underscoring the event’s strong international appeal,” he said.

Ting noted that participation in the marathon has shown consistent growth since its inception. The inaugural event in 2017 drew 3,700 runners, rising to 5,000 in 2018 and 4,800 in 2019 before being cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The event resumed with 5,628 participants in 2023, followed by 6,274 in 2024 and a significant jump to 7,921 participants in 2025.

A key highlight of the 2026 edition is its collaboration with Official Exclusive Humanoid Robot Partner NexAurora Robotics from Suzhou NexAurora Technology Co., Ltd. The partnership will also see the introduction of the “2026 Southeast Asia Humanoid Robot Technology Experience Zone,” featuring technology companies from China showcasing advanced robotics and smart technology solutions.

“Beyond sports, this initiative demonstrates real-world robotics capabilities and AI mobility systems, while positioning Miri as a city that embraces innovation and technological advancement,” Ting said.

He added that the objectives of Miri Marathon 2026 extend beyond the race itself, encompassing sports advancement, technology showcasing and tourism promotion.

“Our aim is to elevate the Miri Marathon to international standards, promote a healthy and active lifestyle, and strengthen Sarawak’s footprint in global sports tourism. At the same time, we want to stimulate domestic and international travel, generate international media exposure, and bring tangible economic benefits to the city,” he said.

With strong support from local authorities, strategic partners and the wider community, Ting said the organisers are committed to enhancing runner services, safety and medical measures, as well as race-day activations.

“The marathon is expected to contribute significantly to hotel occupancy, food and beverage businesses, transportation services and overall local spending.

“Through the fusion of sports, innovation and tourism, Miri Marathon 2026 will further reinforce Miri’s position as a premier destination for world-class events,” he added.

Also present at the press conference were Miri Mayor and Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii, Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong, as well as Miri Marathon 2026 director Yeo Hui Teck.
