MIRI (Feb 19): Police arrested a 22-year-old motorcyclist during a late-night operation at several hotspots here on Wednesday.

Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said during the nine-hour ‘Op Samseng Jalanan’, 10 motorcycles were also seized.

The operation sought to ensure road safety as well as protect the public  from safety risks posed by reckless road users, particularly during the Chinese New Year celebration.

The operation from 6pm on Wednesday until 3am on Thursday involved personnel from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division and Miri Central Police Station.

They focussed on Jalan Piasau, Jalan Pujut, Jalan Tanjong, Miri By-pass and Marina area, locations known for illegal gatherings and reckless riding which disrupts traffic and disturbs public order.

In total, 72 men and 10 women were inspected along with 55 motorcycles.

A total of 95 summonses were issued for offences including expired road tax, missing registration numbers, fancy plates, riding without a valid licence, illegal exhaust modifications, and missing side mirrors.

The arrested motorcyclist was detained under Section 108(3)(f) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for allegedly displaying fake licence plates, while the 10 motorcycles were seized under Section 64 of the same Act pending further action.

Mohd Farhan said such operations would continue as part of ongoing efforts to protect road users and maintain public order.

“Negligence and irresponsible riding pose serious risks — not only to those involved, but to all road users,” he warned, urging motorists to comply with traffic laws, avoid illegal vehicle modifications, and refrain from congregating in ways that cause congestion or endanger others.
