MIRI (Sept 10): Three Miri secondary school students won two gold and eight silver medals at the World Scholar’s Cup Bangkok Global Round early this month.

Bernice Tan of Riam Road Secondary School won a gold and a silver for collaborative writing and individual debate respectively; SMK Lutong’s Alfred Ong won a gold for individual debate; while Constanz Lim from SM Pei Min won a silver for individual debate.

All three also won two silver medals for the team debate and team quiz categories respectively.

The World Scholar’s Cup is an annual international programme featuring debates, writing, and quizzes.

Over 4,000 scholars from 35 countries participated in the Bangkok Global Round this year.

The Miri team also hosted a cultural fair booth showcasing Sarawakian delicacies such as Kek Lapis and Bee Pang (Sarawak Rice Krispies).

They also featured traditional games like Batu Seremban, with an array of Sarawakian snacks as prizes.

The team members’ impressive performance earned them an invitation to the prestigious Tournament of Champions at Yale University in November.

The students, through Champs Education, thanked their parents for raising funds; as well as sponsorship from Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I Datuk Sebastian Ting and Sarawak Oil Palms Berhad.

Champs Education will host the Regional Rounds of the World’s Scholar’s Cup in Miri between April and June next year.

This will be the first time the prestigious competition is held in East Malaysia.
