KUCHING (Dec 23): Sarawak’s private healthcare sector is set for a major boost with the announcement of a state-of-the-art medical centre to be developed in Kota Sentosa, a fast-growing township at the southern gateway to Kuching.
The full-fledged private medical facility will be undertaken by Timber Land Group, and is targeted for completion by 2030.
Phase One of the project is scheduled to kick off in 2027, set to initially comprise 172 beds, with plans to expand into a 300-room medical centre offering more than 30 medical and surgical specialties.
“A key feature under consideration is the incorporation of a dedicated cancer treatment centre, which would provide advanced oncology services such as diagnosis, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
“If realised, this would significantly reduce the need for Sarawakian patients to travel long distances for specialised cancer care,” said the developer in a statement on Tuesday.
According to a project representative, the development aims to establish a centre of medical excellence that is both comprehensive and easily accessible, particularly for communities in southern Sarawak.

“By centralising a wide range of specialist services, including potential oncology care, this facility is intended to meet the growing demand for advanced, integrated healthcare in this part of the state.”
Kota Sentosa was selected for its strategic location as the main entry point into Kuching for travellers from Serian, Sri Aman, Sibu and other parts of Sarawak.
Its accessibility has been further enhanced by the Pan Borneo Highway, which has significantly reduced travel time to the state capital.
The area also serves as a key land gateway for visitors from West Kalimantan via the Tebedu-Entikong border crossing, positioning the medical centre to tap into the growing regional medical tourism market.
In addition, the township will be directly served by the Kuching Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) Red Line, with a station at SR04 Kota Sentosa.
This will provide direct, congestion-free connectivity to Kuching International Airport, Kuching Sentral and the city centre.
The medical centre will form part of a larger integrated wellness precinct within the Lunna development.
Adjacent facilities include Lunna Shopping Mall, which will house retail outlets, a supermarket and food and beverage offerings, as well as Lunna Residences, a development of 490 serviced apartments across four towers.
Designed with resort-style facilities, the residences are intended to accommodate medical specialists, as well as patients and families requiring medium-term stays during treatment.
Amenities planned include wellness-focused facilities such as super trendy pickleball courts and a ‘pilates’ room.
According to the developer, the integrated concept is designed to support holistic recovery by combining healthcare, accommodation and daily conveniences within a single, connected environment.
“With its scale, strategic location and integrated approach, the Kota Sentosa medical centre is expected to become a key healthcare hub for southern Sarawak and neighbouring regions.”
Further details on the project’s master plan are expected to be announced in due course.
