MIRI (March 14): The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (Motac) will recalibrate its strategies with strategic partners to ensure the tourism sector remains resilient despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Deputy Motac Minister Chiew Choon Man said the ministry is holding discussions, while Motac Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing will engage the team to review and implement measures to mitigate the conflict’s impact on tourism.
“We will continue our efforts and adopt all available strategies to further stimulate the arrival of tourists and international visitors, so that we can achieve our targets in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026,” he told reporters after officiating the Miss SHOPhia Raya Happy Hour in conjunction with the Malaysia Super Sale 2026 at Bintang Megamall here.
Earlier, Chiew highlighted the Malaysia Super Sale as a key government initiative to invigorate both the retail and tourism sectors.
The campaign offers Malaysians and international visitors attractive promotions, significant discounts, and world-class shopping experiences.
“The Miss SHOPhia Raya Happy Hour programme is particularly significant as it brings together various elements on a family-friendly platform.
“In addition to showcasing modern lifestyles, the latest Raya fashion and interactive entertainment, it also emphasises savings and value for money, which have become key considerations for consumers amid global economic challenges,” he said.
Chiew added that such programmes are expected to enhance consumer purchasing power, stimulate local economic activity, and generate positive spillover effects across sectors, including retail, hospitality, and services.
He noted that these events also help promote local products and services while strengthening Malaysia’s image as a destination rich in culture, festive celebrations, and world-class shopping and lifestyle experiences.
Chiew said Miri International Airport continues to serve as a strategic gateway to northern Sarawak, attracting domestic travellers as well as cross-border visitors from Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.
“With its strategic location, good air and land connectivity and competitive offerings, Miri has become a preferred destination for short breaks and weekend getaways,” he said.
On Malaysia’s services sector performance in 2025, Chiew said it remained resilient despite global and domestic challenges, reflecting strong demand from both domestic and international visitors.
He added that initiatives like Miss SHOPhia Raya Happy Hour act as catalysts for tourism activities, increase consumer engagement, and stimulate spending, particularly in strategic cities such as Miri.
Chiew also expressed appreciation to Motac’s strategic partners for organising the event, including Meritz Hotel, Parkson, Bintang Megamall, and Pullman Waterfront Miri.
Also present were senior Motac’s Domestic and Events Division Director Mohd Roslan Abdullah, Tourism Malaysia Sarawak Director Rubiah Tul’adwiyah Md Yusof, and Tourism Malaysia Package Development Division Director Zuraini Abdul Ghani.
