KUCHING (Feb 13): The Magistrates’ Court here fined a 31-year-old man RM3,000 in default six months’ jail for possessing an imitation gun.

Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan convicted Mohammad Shahrul Azwan Khaidir on his own guilty plea to a charge under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960.

The Section carries a jail term of up to one year, or a maximum fine of RM5,000, or both, upon conviction.

He was shown on video to be in possession of an imitation gun at KM29 Jalan Kuching-Serian at around 12pm on Feb 9.

According to the facts of the case, a social media video showed an unknown man — later identified as Mohammad Shahrul — riding a motorcycle and aiming an object resembling a gun at a male pedestrian.

The video’s caption stated that it was recorded on Jalan Kuching–Serian and that “what was intended as a joke caused discomfort to others”.

An investigation led to Mohammad Shahrul’s arrest later that evening.

Police also seized a black imitation gun and a black-and-orange motorcycle in connection with the case.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Fauzulutfi Suriani appeared for the prosecution, while Mohammad Shahrul was unrepresented by legal counsel.
