KUCHING (March 25): Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) has engaged with Sarawak Metro and the main contractor to better manage construction activities during peak hours in a bid to ease traffic congestion.
Council chairman Abang Ismawi Abang Ali said MPKS has requested that construction works be avoided during peak periods, particularly around 9am and 4.30pm, to minimise disruption to daily traffic flow.
“We will continue to work closely with all parties to ensure development projects proceed smoothly while reducing the traffic burden on road users,” he told reporters when met at his Hari Raya open house here.
Abang Ismawi acknowledged that traffic congestion remains a key concern in the area, especially with multiple infrastructure projects currently underway.
He noted that while the ongoing construction of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system may contribute to congestion in the short term, it is expected to significantly ease traffic pressure once completed.
“Traffic conditions have improved, but we hope that upon completion of the ART project, congestion in Kota Samarahan will be further reduced,” he said.
He added that Kota Samarahan is undergoing rapid urbanisation, driven by various infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and liveability.
These include the construction of bridges linking village areas, as well as planned road systems and major facilities such as the upcoming Sarawak Cancer Centre.
He also highlighted the recently announced Green Park project by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, which is set to become a major urban development initiative in the coming years.
Spanning approximately 1,000 hectares, the project is expected to generate new residential and business opportunities in Kota Samarahan.
“With these developments, the council and its staff are working hard to ensure smooth implementation of all projects while improving the overall living environment for residents,” he said.
Among those present at the open house were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and wife Datin Amar Enn Ong Siok Ean, as well as Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang and the Premier’s political secretary Kho Teck Wan.
