KUCHING (Sept 6): A street lighting pilot project, designed to offer valuable insights for future improvements to the municipal lighting infrastructure, has been completed along the road from the Kota Padawan roundabout to Penjara Puncak Borneo, said Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai.
According to him, with the particular road stretch now having 150 units of 120W LED lights, public safety will be improved and although the LED lights are the lower wattage LED lights they provide higher illumination.
“By utilising the latest LED technology, MPP aims to provide better illumination with reduced energy consumption, contributing to its goals of cutting the municipality’s carbon footprint and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
“As a pilot initiative, the findings from this project will provide valuable insights for future upgrades to the municipal lighting infrastructure.
“In addition to energy savings, LED lights offer the advantages of emitting less heat, being durable and stable, and providing superior illumination.
“This pilot project is designed to assess how modern lighting technology can enhance overall lighting quality while conserving energy,” he added in a statement issued on Wednesday.
He disclosed that the installation of the LED streetlights in this area was funded by the Public Works Department (JKR) and implemented by Sarawak Energy’s operations arm Syarikat Sesco Berhad (Sesco) which also formed part of Sesco’s assessment on energy consumption reductions and improved energy efficiency.
He added that the pilot project also aligns with MPP’s commitment under the Green City Action Plan (GCAP) to promote energy efficiency, including the use of energy-saving lighting such as LED streetlights.
Tan thus expressed his hope that the LED lights will prove to be highly energy-efficient, cost-effective and environment friendly.
He also said that the project, carried out by Sesco, ensured that all installations met high safety and quality standards, with a total cost of nearly RM980,000 over a period of seven months.
“This initiative reflects the council’s commitment to improving local infrastructure for the safety and convenience of residents,” he said.
