KUCHING (Oct 7): Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has reactivated its ‘No Single Use Plastic Bags’ and ‘No Styrofoam Food Containers’ initiatives to build a healthier society within a sustainable environment.
MPP chairman Tan Kai said these campaigns serve as critical steps towards reducing plastic waste and fostering a more sustainable community.
“I am glad to see more people bringing their own bags when doing their grocery shopping in supermarkets. I also commend the business owners who have supported these initiatives,” he said when representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Hui Hian at the launch of the MPP Cleanliness and Environmental Sustainability Programme in connection with World Environmental Health Day here today.
Tan said the event sought to raise awareness of environmental health in daily life in line with MPP’s continued efforts to pursue Sustainable Development Goals.
This year, MPP has emphasised the importance of integrating health promotion with environmental sustainability initiatives.
“We aim to empower individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles and also contribute to the protection of our planet,” he said.
Tan said MPP aims to educate the community about the impact of food safety, water safety, and waste management so that the people can take care of their health and the environment.
He said the council also encourages the community to reduce waste, conserve water, and support cleaner energy sources to promote sustainable practices.
He said MPP also aims to involve everyone in activities such as cleaning, tree-planting, and health screening campaigns so that the people take ownership and responsibility for the shared environment.
“None of this would be possible without partnerships. As such, collaborations with local governments, non-governmental organisations, and health organisations allow us to maximise our impact,” he added.
At the event, MPP also launched an awareness video that contains vital information on public health and environmental responsibility across the community.
Tan said the video covers critical topics such as rabies, dengue prevention, food hygiene, recycling education, and the importance of proper waste management.
He appealed to the people to share the video available on MPP’s Facebook page.
In addition, an exhibition on health promotion and environmental sustainability was also held with the involvement of the Natural Resources and Environment Board, Department of Environment, and Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd.
