DALAT, May 28: Sarawak’s efforts to nurture the next generation of wushu champions received another boost as 98 young athletes from four districts competed in the Mukah Division Wushu Championship 2026 in Dalat, displaying strong fighting spirit in both Wushu Taolu and Wushu Sanda events.

Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said the championship continues to serve as an important platform to identify young sporting talent while strengthening the development of wushu in the Mukah Division.

She said the achievements of local athletes have been encouraging, with three athletes from Dalat selected to represent Sarawak at the 2026 SUKMA in Selangor.

“The positive growth of the sport can also be seen through the Dalat Wushu Club, which was established in April 2022 with only four members before expanding to nearly 150 members through the dedication of its management committee, coaches and strong support from parents,” she said during the opening ceremony, according to a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) today.

The championship, held at Stadium Perpaduan Dalat on Tuesday, brought together participants from Dalat, Oya, Mukah and Balingian, with a total of 106 events contested.

Fatimah said wushu is not merely a martial art, but also a sport that instils discipline, mental and physical balance, fighting spirit and mutual respect among athletes.

She added that championships such as this also help foster unity among communities of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds through sports.

Fatimah also encouraged parents to continue supporting their children’s participation in sports to help nurture leadership qualities, positive character development and a brighter future. — DayakDaily
