BINTULU (Sept 19): A total of 478 people in Belaga received their motorcycle licence during the MyLesen B2 Programme on Wednesday.

Belaga assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang, who presented the licences, said the MyLesen scheme is one of the government’s efforts through the Transport Ministry (MoT) to help the low-income group get a B2 licence at minimal cost.

“I urge the recipients to be exemplary, disciplined and courteous road users by adhering to all traffic rules and regulations. This can contribute to the reduction of road accidents in the country,” he said in his speech.

Also present were Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) deputy director Nor Azlan Ibrahim, JPJ Bintulu branch chief Fedrick Kedo, and Belaga district officer Bidah Lujah.

Meanwhile, MoT in a statement said the programme includes practice sessions, as well as practical and theory tests, with the objective to ensure that the candidates are competent in motorcycle riding and well-grounded in the basic principles of road safety.

“This aligns with the government’s aspiration to reduce road accident fatalities by 50 per cent by 2030. In 2023, Sarawak recorded 21,418 accident cases. Out of the 378 fatal accidents recorded in that year, 198 cases involved motorcycles,” it said.

MoT said besides road safety concerns, the programme also helps aid licence ownership among the low-income group, thus giving them higher accessibility to job employment.

Similar programmes have also been carried out in Limbang, Batang Lupar and Petra Jaya, among others.
