KUCHING, June 16: The construction of the new bridges and road project from Jalan Nanga Belawai to Jalan Song–Kapit, once completed, is expected to significantly enhance mobility, improve safety, and open up wider economic opportunities for residents of Nanga Belawai and surrounding areas in Kapit.
Works Minister and Kapit MP Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the project carries major importance for local communities, as it will strengthen daily connectivity and reduce reliance on river transportation, which has long been a way of life for residents in the area.
“Thus, my presence at the tender briefing and site visit for the project reflected the government’s continued commitment to ensuring rural infrastructure development remains a priority under a more sustainable and integrated connectivity plan.
“When implemented, this project will complete the Song–Kapit road network, improving travel safety, comfort, mobility, and access to essential services and government facilities,” he said in a post shared on his social media following a visit to the project site today.
The project involves the construction of a 2.8-kilometre JKR R2 standard paved road, a 550-metre bridge across Batang Rajang, and a 160-metre bridge across Sungai Belawai, in addition to upgrading two intersections as well as slope protection, geotechnical, and electrical works.
Nanta expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Works Malaysia, the Public Works Department (JKR) Malaysia, JKR Sarawak, Kapit Resident Office, Kapit District Office, Sarawak Land and Survey Department, and all other agencies involved in the early planning stages for their cooperation and commitment.
He acknowledged that large-scale infrastructure projects inevitably come with challenges, but expressed confidence that strong collaboration between the federal and State governments would help overcome any obstacles.
“The procurement process will be carried out transparently, fairly, and with integrity,” he stressed, adding that contractors must submit competitive proposals based on technical capability, quality, and value for money to ensure timely completion and adherence to standards.
He added that the project goes beyond physical infrastructure, describing it as a long-term investment to connect communities, unlock economic potential, and strengthen rural development in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
