MIRI (Oct 20): The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s (MMEA) new complex at Pulau Melayu here, costing RM118.3 million, is set to become a catalyst for transforming the agency into one of the top security centres in the northern region, said Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

The Works Minister stated that the newly completed MMEA Miri complex reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the capabilities and capacity of national security forces by providing modern and conducive infrastructure.

“The existing MMEA Miri office needs to be improved by increasing the capacity of basic facilities, such as the quarters building, administration building, surau, support building, and jetty, as well as its capabilities in terms of assets, equipment, systems, and skills, which I am sure will be addressed by the Home Ministry.

“This is crucial for increasing security and safety in Miri waters as well as in the northern region,” he said when officiating the handing over of the complex to MMEA today.

Nanta mentioned that the complex was a project under the 11th Malaysia Plan, entrusted to the ministry’s Special Project Team 2 (PPK2) in 2020.

He said that the project was implemented using a design-and-build methodology by the appointed contractor, Bangkit Energy & Pro Logistik (EM) Sdn. Bhd.

It began with possession of the site on June 19, 2020, and the Certificate of Practical Completion (CPC) was issued by the PPK2 project director on Sept 27 this year.

“The complex, built on a 6.25-acre site, features 95 residential units, comprising 80 Class F and 15 Class D units, each complete with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living room.

“Meanwhile, the administration building is equipped with facilities such as the director’s office, deputy director’s office, a multi-purpose hall, gymnasium, lockup, and surau,” he said.

Other amenities include 179 parking spaces and 79 parking spots for motorcycles.

Nanta added that the completion of the complex underscores the Madani government’s aspirations of delivering quality infrastructure projects on time and within budget.

On another note, Nanta reminded the contractor to uphold its commitment and fulfil its responsibilities during the Defects Liability Period (DLP). He said the Public Works Department (JKR Malaysia) needs to monitor the processes after the handover of the building to ensure there are no delays and that all work is carried out in accordance with the rules.
