KUCHING, May 22: The launch of the National Plan of Action (NPOA) 2.0 sees the expansion of coral reef conservation and sustainable management efforts beyond Sabah to include Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.

According to Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, the initiative ensures that ecologically critical reefs—particularly those in Pulau Redang, Pulau Tioman, and other major tourism hubs—can be integrated into the nation’s unified biodiversity conservation and community livelihood frameworks.

“NPOA 2.0 builds directly upon the foundational milestones achieved under the policy’s first iteration, driven by robust cross-sector partnerships,” the ministry said.

The ministry’s secretary-general, Datuk Anis Rizana Mohd Zainudin, officiated the launch, which was held during a dinner in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on Thursday (May 21).

Meanwhile, the ministry said that Malaysia is working towards curbing marine pollution by carrying out a comprehensive mid-term review of three core national plastic policies, namely the National Marine Litter Policy and Action Plan (NMLPAP), the Malaysia Roadmap Towards Zero Single-Use Plastics, and the Malaysia Plastics Sustainability Roadmap (MPSR). — DayakDaily
