KUCHING (March 10): The Metropolitan Food Cluster (MFC) Opar project in Stungkor, Lundu has reached nearly 30 per cent completion and is ahead of schedule.

The Ministry of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development said in a statement that the development marks a significant step in the state’s efforts to strengthen food security and modernise its agricultural sector.

Spanning 84ha, the project is a collaboration between the Sarawak government and the Netherlands, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing modern agricultural practices, innovation, and sustainable food production, it said.

Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said the project would incorporate advanced agricultural technologies adapted from the Netherlands to boost the production of high-value food products and connect local output with global markets.

“The project will also help attract more young people to venture into agro-based businesses that are modern, technology-driven, and competitive,” he said during a site visit to the MFC Opar project site in Stungkor on Monday.

The infrastructure planned under the project include a consolidation centre, beverage processing plant, animal feed processing plant, greenhouse, greenhouse service centre, and an experience centre comprising an event hall, retail centre, and office area to support the overall integrated food industry ecosystem.

Scheduled for completion in June 2027, MFC Opar is expected to create new opportunities for farmers and agripreneurs while strengthening local supply chains and economic activity in Lundu and surrounding areas.

Among those present during the visit were Deputy Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Minister Datuk Martin Ben, Advisor in the Premier’s Office (Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development) Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang, and ministry permanent secretary Datu Sirai Daha.
