MUKAH (March 17): The opening of the Batang Igan Bridge on March 16 has been warmly welcomed by residents, as the new infrastructure significantly improves connectivity between Igan, Matu and Daro.

Residents expressed appreciation to the Sarawak government for completing the long-awaited project, noting that it reduces reliance on ferry services which previously caused lengthy waiting times and travel delays.

Hartini Abdul Rahman, 56, said the bridge has made travel faster and more convenient compared to the past.

“Previously, we had to wait for the ferry and the journey took quite a long time.

“Now, travelling is much quicker and smoother.

“It has made things much easier for us.

“I would like to thank the Sarawak government for improving the lives of residents in Igan,” she said in a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).

Another resident, Hashim Ismail, 60, said he expressed gratitude for the completion of the bridge after decades of anticipation.

“After waiting for so many years, this dream has finally become a reality.

“Although I am already retired and aged over 60, I am thankful to still be able to to experience the convenience of this bridge,” he said.

Mohd Nasri Sahari

Mohd Nasri Sahari, 51, described the opening of the bridge as a long-awaited moment for the people of Igan.

“This is something the people here have been waiting for many years,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Nizam Naim, 39, said the bridge represents a significant improvement for residents who previously depended on ferry services, where travel could take nearly an hour, especially during festive seasons.

“As residents of Igan, we are very grateful that the long-held wish to have a bridge linking Igan and Matu has finally been realised,” Mohd Nizam said, adding that the project reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of rural communities.

Nur Syaffilla Mohd Hamzah, 42, also described the bridge would bring significantly benefits to residents in Igan and nearby areas.

According to her, the bridge not only shortens travel time but also improves the daily mobility for the local community.
