Tham says Abdul Halim’s experience as a former High Court judge is expected to bring a fresh direction to the commission.
KOTA KINABALU (April 25): The appointment of new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner should not be viewed merely as a leadership change but as an opportunity to restore public confidence in the commission’s independence, transparency and integrity, said Likas assemblyman Tham Yun Fook.
Referring to the appointment of Datuk Abdul Halim Aman as the new MACC chief commissioner, Tham said Abdul Halim’s experience as a former High Court judge is expected to bring a fresh direction to the commission.
“I hope his extensive judicial experience will strengthen governance, enhance professionalism, and ensure that every investigation is conducted without fear or favour,” he said in a statement issued on Saturday.
At the same time, Tham stressed that issues arising during the tenure of former MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki should not be overlooked following the leadership transition.
“Although Tan Sri Azam Baki has not been reappointed, the issues that arose during his tenure cannot simply be regarded as resolved,” he said.
He noted that allegations involving breaches of General Orders, previously raised shareholding issues, and alleged links to elements described as a “corporate mafia” must continue to be taken seriously and investigated where there is sufficient basis.
“A change in leadership should not be used as a reason to close the book on questions that still demand answers,” he said.
Tham emphasised that the principle of accountability requires any allegation touching on institutional integrity and public interest to be thoroughly investigated.
“I hope that under the new leadership, the MACC will continue to demonstrate that no one is above the law, and that the anti-corruption agenda will be pursued with greater courage, independence and credibility in the interest of the nation,” he said.
“The rakyat are watching. This is the time to prove that the fight against corruption championed by the Prime Minister is not merely a slogan, but a genuine commitment that is truly being implemented.”
